Restaurant critic’s departure reveals potential hazards of the job

NEW YORK (AP) - Restaurant critics appear to have the best job in journalism, enjoying meals a few nights a week on someone else’s dime. But New York Times restaurant critic Pete Wells is painting a more complicated picture. In a recent column, Wells announced he’s leaving the beat because the constant eating has led to obesity and other health problems. To write a review, critics usually make two or three visits to a restaurant so they can taste as many dishes as possible. And restaurant food tends to contain higher than ideal levels of salt and saturated fat, according to a 2020 study by Tufts University.

NEW YORK (AP) - An 89-year-old comedian is recovering after being randomly punched and knocked to the ground while waiting to cross a street in New York earlier this month. D’yan Forest said she had just stopped at a coffee shop and was heading to a swimming pool when someone came up to her from behind and hit her in the eye. Police on Saturday said the female suspect in the July 10 incident had a medium complexion and cornrow braids and was last seen wearing a tank top and shorts with a Jurassic Park logo. Forest holds the Guinness World Record for being the oldest working female comedian.

In a California gold rush town, some Black families are fighting for land taken from their ancestors

COLOMA, Calif. (AP) - A historic gold-rush town in Northern California is at the center of a restitution fight led by Black families who say their ancestors’ land was taken. Gold was found in Coloma in 1848, a discovery that set off the California gold rush. White, Asian, and free and enslaved Black people settled in the town in the years that followed. Decades later, the government seized land from Black and white families to make way for the Marshall Gold Discovery State Park. Black residents living today who say they are descended from families who owned property in Coloma before it was seized are seeking compensation or for the land to be returned.
