Olympics opening ceremony director hopes to subvert “Emily in Paris” image of city

PARIS (AP) – If everything you know about Paris is from the series “Emily in Paris,” the artistic director of the Paris Olympics opening ceremony hopes to change your perspective. Thomas Jolly says shows like “Emily in Paris” and movies like “Amelie” created an image of Paris that is not the city Parisians know. However, Jolly says the opening ceremony will play with images like that and “turn them on their heads.” The opening ceremony for the Olympics is Friday.

NEW YORK (AP) – The retrial for former movie producer Harvey Weinstein is tentatively set for Nov. 12. If Weinstein had his way, it would start earlier. Weinstein attorney Diana Fabi Samson told reporters after Friday’s hearing in New York that Weinstein is “anxious to go to trial and prove his innocence.” Weinstein will be retried on charges of rape and sexual assault after New York state’s highest court threw out his 2020 conviction earlier this year.

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (AP) – “Longlegs” star Maika (MY’-kah) Monroe was a child actor, but it’s doubtful you saw her in anything. Monroe says she did commercials for Purina dog food and for Pizza Hut, and a short film. Monroe says she tried out for all kinds of Disney Channel and Nickelodeon shows, but she’s glad she did not get them because that’s not her. She says she was lucky that her parents let her do acting for fun and ingrained in her that it did not matter if she got the job as long as she enjoyed the journey.

“The Great Train Robbery” cave collapses

BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. (AP) – Part of an ancient cave used to film the 1903 silent film “The Great Train Robbery” has collapsed after heavy rains. Adam Morris, the property manager of the campground near Bear Cave in Buchanan, Michigan, tells MLive.com that the cave’s wall collapsed this week. Morris says the cave is closed while an inspection takes place. Recent storms have dumped seven inches of rain in the area. In 1895, bandits hid in the cave after robbing an Ohio bank. Filmmakers shot part of “The Great Train Robbery” in the same cave.
