Rising Indian actor Triptii Dimri is expanding her repertoire with a slate of diverse projects, including her first major comedic role and one of Bollywood’s biggest franchises.

Dimri discussed her transition to comedy in the newly released film “Bad Newz,” which is on its way to becoming a major hit, after earlier establishing herself in dramatic roles. “I personally gravitate towards drama a lot, because it’s my favorite genre. And I think somewhere I had found my comfort there,” Dimri told Variety . “But then there came a point where I was like, now I need to try something else, I need to do something more so that I can improve my craft.”

The actor found comedy to be particularly challenging at first. “I remember the first few weeks, I was really struggling to understand the character, or to understand the beats of the film,” she said. A thematic sequel to 2019 hit pregnancy comedy “Good Newwz,” “Bad Newz” revolves around heteropaternal superfecundation, a reproductive process in which twins are born to the same mother from different biological fathers.

Dimri credited her director Anand Tiwari and co-stars Vicky Kaushal and Ammy Virk, for helping her find her footing in the new genre. “Every day was a learning experience on the set because with comedy, it’s like you have to be in the moment truly, otherwise you will fall flat. So there were challenges, but it was a lot of fun.”

Her acting coach Saurabh Sachdeva also provided a key insight that helped unlock her performance. “He said, ‘You’re not being able to portray it because you’re judging your character,'” Dimri recalled. “Once you cut the judgment off, then only you can play the character with full honesty.”

Dimri’s profile rose significantly last year with her role in the controversial but commercially successful film “Animal,” where she starred alongside Ranbir Kapoor. The film sparked debate due to its depiction of misogyny and violence. “It was a great experience. Yes, a lot of criticism also came along with it. But I think it’s a part and parcel of the game. And every actor has to go through it,” Dimri said. She noted that the experience brought her work to a wider audience. “After ‘Animal,’ they watched my other work,” she said.

A sequel, “Animal Park,” is being planned. “For now, honestly, I’m as clueless as the audience is, I don’t know when it will start or what’s the story, I just know that it’s going to happen, when I don’t know,” Dimri said.

Prior to her breakout in “Animal,” Dimri had already received critical acclaim for her performances in several notable films. These include 2018 romantic drama “Laila Majnu,” which earned her recognition for her portrayal of the titular Laila. Dimri then starred in two Netflix productions that further showcased her acting prowess: the supernatural thriller “Bulbbul” (2020) and the psychological drama “Qala” (2022). Both films received praise for Dimri’s nuanced performances, establishing her as a talented actor capable of handling complex, emotionally demanding roles.

Looking ahead, Dimri is set to appear in major feature film franchise instalment “Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3,” which is due a Diwali holiday frame release, comedy “Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video” and drama “Dhadak 2.” “Audiences will definitely get to see me in different avatars, which is always a great space to be in,” Dimri said.

Dimri also plans to begin auditioning for Western projects and is seeking an agent. “Even if I get a small part somewhere, I think it will be really helpful because I love the way actors work there,” Dimri said.
