    BUSINESS PEOPLE: Safe Children VP speaks at Fundraising Day in N.Y.

    Safe Children Coalition’s vice president of communications and community engagement, Jacqueline House, recently spoke at Fundraising Day in New York, a prominent one-day conference in the realm of philanthropy.

    The annual event, presented by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, New York City chapter, attracts more than 1,000 fundraisers each year who are looking to learn during sessions addressing the entirety of fundraising, including current trends and emerging developments.House co-presented a session titled “How to Plan and Implement a Successful Capital Campaign with a Small Development Team: Case Studies.” The session offered information intended to help attendees at smaller organizations to plan and implement a successful campaign one step at a time, and hear success stories from those who have done it.

    There were about 100 conference participants in attendance.The event took place as Safe Children Coalition, in Sarasota, is in the midst of a major capital campaign to build a new Youth Shelter for homeless teens in Florida’s Circuit 12 (Sarasota, DeSoto and Manatee counties). The multimillion-dollar effort has so far raised over 70% of what SCC leaders expect the facility to cost.There are more than 2,000 homeless teens in the 12th Judicial Circuit at any given time. The Youth Shelter will be located on Sawyer Road in north Sarasota, on two acres of land. The building will provide emergency housing for youths ages 10-17, providing nearly 3,000 safe shelter bed-nights a year and serving up to 200 youths annually for many years to come.House has worked in the philanthropic realm since 1996, serving in a variety of positions to support membership, marketing and fundraising. In addition to her employment with SCC – where she has worked for just under four years – she serves as a board member for the Charitable Gift Planners of Southwest Florida and Association of Fundraising Professionals, Southwest Florida chapter.

    PR professionals complete class

    The Florida Public Relations Association’s Central West Coast Chapter congratulates Kaylea Schule and Jennifer Hemmerdinger for completing LeadershipFPRA’s class VIII and Laura Ansel, Jennifer Linzy and Jodel Velarde for being accepted into class IX.

    LeadershipFPRA is designed to provide FPRA members with the tools they need to become leaders in their organizations and communities and within the association.

    This competitive statewide program accepts only 21 participants per class, who then travel together throughout Florida for five full-day sessions to meet and learn from the most accomplished public relations professionals in the state.

    Some of the topics explored in this program include Law and Ethics, Leading and Managing and Cross-Functional Business Strategies.

    Banker wins Chairman's Award

    Dennis B. Murphy, Jr. was presented with the prestigious Chairman’s Award at the Florida Bankers Association.

    Murphy, president and CEO of Gulfside Bank, and Corey Neil, president and CEO of the Bank of Tampa, were both recognized for their work on the IOTA program by Jose Cueto, chairman of the Florida Bankers Association and CEO of Grove Bank & Trust.

    Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota and DeSoto Counties has hired Jeffrey Phillips as vice president of finance.

    He has a wealth of experience and a proven track record in financial management to help the nonprofit empower youths ages 6 to 18 to succeed in school, practice healthy habits, become leaders and plan for success after high school graduation.

    With more than 30 years of experience in banking, accounting and finance, Phillips has held senior leadership roles such as corporate banking officer, corporate controller and chief financial officer.

    In his new role at BGCSDC, Phillips will be responsible for overseeing all financial functions, including accounting processes, budgeting, property management, annual audits and the administration of property and liability insurance. As a key member of the senior management team, he will help lead the strategic vision for the organization’s future,

    He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in finance from the University of South Florida.

    Board-certified real estate attorney John D. Dumbaugh, a partner with the Sarasota-based law firm Syprett Meshad, was recently recognized by the Florida Bar for 50 years of continuous membership.

    During a special luncheon held June 21 in Orlando, Dumbaugh and other 50-year members from across the state of Florida gathered to celebrate being active members of The Florida Bar since 1974.

    Dumbaugh had previously received the President’s Pro Bono Service Award from the Florida Bar in recognition of his pro bono service to the community. In 2013, he was honored with the Legacy Award by Habitat for Humanity Sarasota in recognition of his 20-plus years of service to the organization.

    His practice areas are focused on real estate development, international real estate investment, title insurance, lending practice, and estate planning and administration.
