How would you feel if you or your child did not have an equal opportunity to higher education? Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs in higher education promote fair treatment and full participation of all people.

Diversity, equity and inclusion have historically focused on underrepresented groups subject to discrimination based on identity or disability. Although many view these programs as a way to discriminate, DEI is a much broader focus. The focus is on the community and breaking down barriers of indoctrination and oppression to focus on inclusion.

We live in a world full of diversity; therefore, DEI allows each individual to learn from one another. Higher education DEI ensures all students experience a welcoming and supportive environment. Many may be under the impression that DEI is specific to certain races. DEI also includes individuals with disabilities, veterans and women. It is not specific to any particular race or gender.

The main focus is to learn from others and form an inclusive community. The support from DEI programs in higher education can enhance student success. Individuals who feel welcomed and supported are more likely to succeed in their program of study. DEI brings awareness through education to combat bias, ignorance and prejudice.

Promoting DEI across all levels of education is a way to achieve a diverse and inclusive campus climate. Research suggests that faculty representation of underrepresented groups may increase a sense of belonging to underrepresented student groups.

Support systems help all students thrive on campus and can be important for students who do not comprise a racial or ethnic majority. DEI programs offer safe spaces that reflect cultural backgrounds and help reduce feelings of isolation. This practice can increase retention rates for underrepresented students, faculty and staff.

The Obama administration worked to improve access to higher education and help more students complete their college education. During that time, the Obama administration celebrated the progress made and taken to reach important milestones. These milestones included more students of color going to college, the college-going numbers of Black and Hispanic college students increased 4 percentage points throughout that period, and the share of Hispanic young adults with a bachelor's degree increased 4 percentage points.

Diversity, equity and inclusion programs in higher education institutions are not an effort to discriminate against individuals. These programs are a way to get to know others' cultures. DEI programs are a tool to educate and include all individuals in the diverse population equally. The main focus should be on supporting diversity through equality and inclusion. DEI programs do not focus on discriminating against any group of people or individuals. DEI is not about promising equal outcomes but equal access to opportunities. DEI initiatives are essential for building a foundation of healthy communities.

Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt signed Executive Order 2023-31 on Dec. 13, 2023, prohibiting state agencies, colleges and universities from using state funds to support diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. Executive Order 2023-31 will negatively impact colleges and universities, students with disabilities, international students, veterans and others. We are all part of a diverse community; why not learn from each other?
