    Four killed in crash on Airline Highway in St. Charles Parish

    ST. CHARLES PARISH, La. ( WGNO ) — A fatal crash involving several vehicles in St. Charles Parish completely shut down Airline Highway on Monday, July 22.

    According to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, around 6 a.m., deputies responded to the scene between Interstate 310 and St. Rose.

    The Louisiana State Police reported that an investigation showed 33-year-old Mathieu Christophe was driving a GMC south in the southbound lanes of U.S. 61 near the Interstate 310 overpass while 38-year-old Benjamin Alexis was driving a Volkswagen north in the southbound lanes, approaching the overpass.

    The Volkswagen then reportedly hit the GMC head-on.

    Christophe and Benjamin Alexis suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. Three passengers in the Volkswagen, 8-year-old Benjamin Alexis III, 5-year-old Charles Alexis and an unidentified juvenile, were taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

    According to the LSP, the passengers in the Volkswagen were not properly restrained at the time of the crash and it is unknown if Benjamin Alexis was properly restrained. LSP troopers said Christophe was properly restrained.

    LSP officials said Benjamin Alexis III and Charles Alexis were later pronounced dead at a hospital. The unidentified juvenile was last reported to be in critical condition.

    LSP officials said the investigation is ongoing, and routine toxicology samples were collected.
