Michigan gas prices raise 10 cents in last week as supply slows, AAA reports

The cost for filling a gas tank has gone up in the last week. Michigan gas prices have risen since last week by ten cents a gallon on average, according to AAA.

In Detroit, a gallon of gas costs on average $3.64. That's 11 cents more expensive than last week and 14 cents more expensive than the national average. For 15 gallons — a full tank for many — that works out to about $55.

The spike in price comes amid a national lull in demand for gasoline, AAA reported on Monday. However, experts suggest that prices are rising in the midwest due to severe weather near an Exxon-Mobil refinery in Joliet, Illinois, which supplies the area with millions of gallons of fuel. As the refinery remains out of commission Michiganders are paying more at the pump.

"After dropping slightly early last week, Michigan gas prices saw a spike over the weekend," said Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson at AAA. "If gas demand remains low, alongside an increase in supply, pump prices could possibly reverse course."

Around the state, gas prices came in above the national average of $3.50 a gallon. In Jackson, $3.75; Lansing, $3.75; Benton Harbor, $3.73; Ann Arbor, $3.71. Marquette was the largest city listed to come in below the national average at $3.48 a gallon.
