Michigan Expands Electric Vehicle Charging Network with New Grants

Muskegon, Traverse City, and Other Coastal Cities to Benefit

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has announced a significant boost to the state's electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure. Seventeen grants, totaling $905,567, have been awarded to support the continued development of the Lake Michigan Circuit, a multistate initiative aimed at enhancing EV charging availability along the scenic Lake Michigan shoreline.

This funding is part of Michigan's broader efforts to fulfill the goals of the MI Healthy Climate Plan and MI Future Mobility Plan. EGLE Director Phil Roos highlighted the importance of this initiative, saying, "Michiganders who have made the transition to electric vehicles need to know accessible, reliable charging stations are available to them as they enjoy everything our state has to offer. The Lake Michigan Circuit will allow travelers to experience Lake Michigan and visit our coastal communities and attractions along and around the route."

Boosting Coastal Tourism and Connectivity

The Lake Michigan Circuit spans 1,100 miles of shoreline across Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana, featuring strategically placed charging stations at recreational areas, hospitality businesses, and entertainment attractions. This project aims to eliminate "range anxiety" for EV drivers, allowing them to embark on long-distance road trips without worrying about charging availability.

In Michigan, the initiative is a collaborative effort involving the Michigan Department of Transportation and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s Office of Future Mobility and Electrification. "The Lake Michigan Circuit perfectly aligns with our state’s vision of providing greater access to charging infrastructure for all Michiganders," stated Michigan Chief Mobility Officer Justine Johnson. "Together, we are dedicated to collaborating across state government and with our partners in education and industry to advance our promise of accessible and sustainable mobility options."

Local Communities to Receive Charging Stations

The newly announced grants will fund the installation of direct charge/fast charging (DCFC) stations and Level 2 chargers across various locations on Michigan's west coast. These installations are supported by EGLE’s Charge Up Michigan program and the Volkswagen Settlement Trust for fiscal year 2024.

Grant Recipients:

• Muskegon: Adelaide Point Qualified Opportunity Zone Business receives $70,000 for one 200 kW DCFC.
• Traverse City: Chateau Chantal Winery & Inn is awarded $5,000 for one 7.2 kW Level 2 charger.
• Manistique and St. Ignace: Cloverland Electric Cooperative receives $96,285 each for one 180 kW DCFC.
• Frankfort: $5,000 granted for one 19.9 kW Level 2 charger.
• Manistee: Multiple awards totaling $83,960 for various Level 2 and DCFC chargers.
• Bridgman: Red E Charging receives $135,831 for two 320 kW DCFC.
• Grand Haven: Grants totaling $117,897 for two DCFC stations.
• New Buffalo: Two awards of $10,000 each for Level 2 chargers.
• South Haven: Multiple awards totaling $275,344 for DCFC and Level 2 chargers.
• Universal EV: Various awards for charging stations in Grand Haven, Muskegon, and South Haven.

These investments are part of a broader strategy to expand Michigan’s EV charging network, including a recent budget allocation of over $30 million for fiscal year 2025. This budget will support further development of EV infrastructure, including hydrogen fueling, inductive charging, and fleet transition efforts.
