Versatile configuration, and original bodywork, featured at Mecum Auctions.

The Monterey 2024 Mecum Auctions will showcase an extraordinary 1959 Porsche 718 RSK Center Seat, a rare gem in the world of classic sports cars. Chassis No. 718-028, one of only six produced in the center seat configuration, retains its original Wendler bodywork and boasts a distinguished racing history. This particular 718 RSK was built in April 1959 and delivered to Christian Goethals of Belgium, who raced it to notable victories, including a first-place finish at the 1959 Leopoldville Grand Prix in the Belgian Congo.

Powered by a 1587cc DOHC flat 4-cylinder engine with dual Weber 46 IDM1 carburetors, this Porsche delivers impressive performance. It features a 5-speed manual transaxle and is equipped with helically-finned 4-wheel drum brakes. The car’s unique design allows it to convert from a center seat configuration to a left-hand, two-seat setup in just a few hours, making it versatile for various racing formats. Documented with significant historical paperwork, including its original build details and racing accolades, this 718 RSK stands as a testament to Porsche's engineering prowess and racing heritage.

Christian Goethals piloted the car to a sixth overall and third in class at the 1960 Buenos Aires 1000km Grand Prix, among other notable achievements. After its successful stint in Europe, the car was sold to Carmelo Guiffre of New York and later to G.F. Leydorf Jr., before ending up with Rick Grant of Dayton, Ohio. Grant restored the car for vintage racing, and it participated in over 100 events, driven by John Higgins. The engine, rebuilt by Porsche 4-cam expert Bill Doyle at Rennwagen Motor Company, ensures the car’s performance remains top-notch.
