Canadian wildfire smoke returns to Wisconsin

Canadian wildfire smoke is back in Wisconsin, although not as bad as last year.

A post on X from the Green Bay National Weather Service office reported hazy skies as a result of elevated wildfire smoke from Western Canada.

"Patchy dense fog will result in locally hazardous travel in parts of central and north central Wisconsin early this morning. Morning commuters should use caution," the National Weather Service said on its website.

Ben Miller, meteorologist for the Weather Service office in Sullivan, said the smoke is widespread across the Midwest and Great Lakes area.

Miller said the smoke is thousands of feet up in the air. That could cause colorful sunrises and sunsets, and also potentially polluted air.

"The air quality is currently stagnant, but as days progress pollutants increase," Miller said.

Miller said pollutants from the smoke would have to move closer to the surface to become more of a concern.

He predicted the smoke will hang around a while until a strong cold front pushes it out. There is a cold front on its way tomorrow, which will help slightly, but not clear it up entirely.
