    Oklahoma's education system ranked second-worst in the country: See the study

    A recent study from a personal finance company ranked Oklahoma's education system the second-worst in the country.

    Based on various measures from pupil-teacher ratio to median standardized test scores, WalletHub ranked every state's education system.

    With 100 representing the highest quality of public education, Oklahoma received a 32.8 grade. The only state ranked lower was New Mexico, with a score of 27.92.

    Does Oklahoma have a good education system?

    The WalletHub study sought to determine the best and worst states for public school education by comparing them based on quality and safety. Each state was graded using 32 metrics, such as dropout rate, test scores and bullying, on a 100-point scales.

    Here's how Oklahoma ranked in different key metrics in the study:

    • Quality: 50th
    • Math test scores: 47th
    • Reading test scores: 47th
    • Pupil-teacher ratio: 39th
    • Median SAT score: 47th
    • Median ACT score: 43rd
    • Dropout rate: 46th
    • Bullying incidence rate: 27th
    • Percent of threatened or injured high school students: 19th
    • Existence of digital learning plan: 33rd

    Which states have the best education systems?

    Cassandra Happe, a WalletHub analyst, said funding is essential for school systems, but it doesn't guarantee success.

    "How funds are applied also plays a big role in how good a school system is, as does the quality of educators, other professionals and the curriculum, Happe said. "In addition, schools need to focus not just on test scores but also on making sure that students feel safe, comfortable and cared for.”

    Massachusetts came out on top in WalletHub's study as having the best education system in the country. Happe attributed this to the state's high test scores and safe school environments.
