2024 3M Open odds, picks, field: Surprising predictions from golf model that's called 13 majors
By CBS Sports Staff,
With the 2024 major season completed, many of the top golfers on the PGA Tour are taking this week off and skipping the 2024 3M Open. But that leaves the chance for some new faces to emerge victorious and guarantee themselves a two-year extension on their PGA Tour card with a victory, which is a career-changing opportunity for many of those in the 2024 3M Open field. Sahith Theegala (No. 11) is the highest-ranked player in the world golf rankings in the 2024 3M Open field and at 22-1 odds, should he be golfer to back this week?
Theegala has only won one of 96 career PGA Tour events, but he could be the breakout performer at the 3M Open 2024 when play begins on Thursday at TPC Twin Cities. Tony Finau is the 10-1 favorite followed by Sam Burns (18-1) in the latest 2024 3M Open odds. Before locking in your 2024 3M Open picks, be sure to see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .
SportsLine's proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June 2020. In fact, the model is up nearly $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.
This same model has also nailed a whopping 13 majors entering the weekend, including the 2024 Masters -- its third Masters in a row -- and this year's PGA Championship and U.S. Open. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.
One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2024 3M Open: Burns, a five-time winner on the PGA Tour and one of the top favorites, stumbles this week and doesn't even crack the top five. Burns has been playing well in recent weeks, finishing T-15 or better in three of his last five starts on the PGA Tour.
However, he has struggled with consistency this season, especially with his iron play. Burns enters this week's event ranked 101st in strokes gained: approach to green (0.016) and 131st in greens in regulation percentage (64.13%). TPC Twin Cities places a premium on precision, which doesn't bode well for Burns' chances to finish on top of the leaderboard. See who else to fade here .
Another surprise: Keith Mitchell, a 30-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Mitchell hasn't won a tournament since the 2019 Honda Classic, but he's made the cut in 14 of 20 events this season, including three top-10 finishes.
Mitchell has made the cut in three of four career 3M Open tournaments, including back-to-back top-five performances. The 32-year-old shot a 16-under-par to finish T-5 at last year's 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities. Mitchell is 76th in the FedEx Cup standings and outside of the top 70 to qualify for the FedEx Cup playoffs. With just three tournaments left before the playoffs, this is a huge opportunity for Mitchell to secure valuable points to qualify for the playoffs. See who else to back here .
How to make 2024 3M Open picks
The model is also targeting four other golfers with odds of 30-1 or longer who will make a strong run at the title, including three golfers fetching 60-1 or longer odds finishing inside the top 10. You can only see the model's picks here .
