LANSING, Mich. (WJMN) — A day after President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 race for the presidency, Gretchen Whitmer and three other governors of Midwest states are expressing their support for Vice President Kamala Harris to be the Democratic Party’s nominee for president.

The governor issued the endorsement in unison with fellow governors in midwestern states: Governor J.B. Pritzker (D-Illinois), Governor Tim Walz (D-Minnesota), and Governor Tony Evers (D-Wisconsin).

“In Vice President Harris, Michigan voters have a presidential candidate they can count on to focus on lowering their costs, restoring their freedoms, bringing jobs and supply chains back home from overseas, and building an economy that works for working people,” said Whitmer. “She’s a former prosecutor, a champion for reproductive freedom, and I know that she’s got Michigan’s back.”

Whitmer contrasted her record with the Republican nominee’s, saying, “that’s in stark contrast to Donald Trump, a convicted felon who stokes violence, overturned Roe, attacked our auto industry which hardworking families depend on, left office after losing 100,000 manufacturing jobs, and drove our economy into the ground last time he was in the White House.”

The endorsement comes as Whitmer’s name has been discussed among other possible successors to President Biden. In a Sunday announcement, Biden endorsed Harris.

“Vice President Harris has my full support,” said Whitmer. “So Michigan, let’s get to work. We cannot let Donald Trump anywhere near the White House. Let’s go!”
