Indie filmmaker Zach Clark is returning to the big screen with the alien sci-fi dramedy “The Becomers.”

Written and directed by “White Reindeer” filmmaker Clark, “The Becomers” centers on two aliens who realize just how messed up America is after landing on Earth.

The official synopsis reads: “Forced to flee their dying planet, two body-snatching alien lovers arrive separately on Earth. Determined to find each other, the aliens jump from body to body, but they quickly learn that it’s not easy to inhabit their new, fleshy hosts, and that life in modern-day America is more complicated than they could have ever imagined.”

Molly Plunk, Mike Lopez, Keith Kelly, Isabel Alamin, and Frank V. Ross star. Sparks lead Russell Mael narrates.

The film is being released by Dark Star Pictures and includes satirical references to COVID, QAnon, and other divisive issues in American politics. The film debuted at the 2023 Fantasia International Film Festival and had its U.S. premiere at Beyond Fest.

Clark previously directed the 2013 SXSW breakout “White Reindeer,” which follows a real estate agent grappling with tragedy while wandering strip clubs and department stores in suburban Virginia. His follow-up “Little Sister” similarly dealt with American ennui , as Addison Timlin played a young nun who returns to her North Carlina home after her brother returns from the Iraq War. Ally Sheedy and Barbara Crampton co-starred. IndieWire’s David Ehrlich called the film “weird, winsome, and wonderful” and Clark’s “best film to date” at the time.

“The Becomers” is Clark’s fifth feature. He has also edited festival films “Always Shine,” “Don’t Leave Home,” and “Jobe’z World.”

“The Becomers” is produced by Joe Swanberg and Eric Ashworth. Eddie Linker produced for Slasher Film Company. Daryl Pittman is the cinematographer with Glamhag as production designer. Fritz Myers composed the film’s original score.

Swanberg’s Forager Films, which he co-founded with Linker, formerly produced “Unexpected,” Alex Ross Perry‘s “Queen of Earth,” and Harrison Atkin’s debut “Lace Crater.”

Back in 2016, Clark told IndieWire of working with Swanberg as a low-budget producer, “The more I make these things, the more I realize that making low-budget movies isn’t about spending less money on everything. It’s about picking the things that you do spend the exact same amount of money that you would spend on any other movie then see what you can get away with.”

“The Becomers” premieres in theaters August 23 in New York at Cinema Village, in Los Angeles on August 30 at Lumiere Music Hall, and in Chicago on September 13 at Music Box Theatre. The film will be on demand September 24. Check out the trailer, exclusive to IndieWire, below.
