ROCK RAPIDS, IA (KELO) — There will some new deputies patrolling the streets in northwestern Iowa. The Lyon County Sheriff’s Department has recently added three officers to their staff.

Mason Langenhorst and Devin Miller are two of the newest deputies in Lyon County. Both of them grew up in northwestern Iowa.

“They are aware of how things operate here in Lyon County, and I think they’re going to fit in with the communities just perfectly, and I think the the Lyon County residents will be very happy with our selection also,” Lyon Co. Sheriff Stewart Vander Stoep said.

Langenhorst was a full-time dispatcher before becoming a deputy.

“The transition phase was a little odd. People kind of gave me the weird looks of, ‘You’re in uniform now. That’s weird,'” Langenhorst said.

Miller worked for South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks near Platte, South Dakota, before moving back to his home.

“I moved back to my community and just wanted to be able to give back and serve to the community however I could,” Miller said.

Both deputies still have a little bit of training left, but they hope to one day specialize in something within the department.

“I would like to eventually become like a drug investigator or K-9 unit,” Langenhorst said.

“I just want to be able to kind of find my niche going with my experience so far and experience at the academy. I think I’m leaning towards like a K-9 officer of some sort,” Miller said.

And both deputies are ready for the challenges the job might throw at them.

“Just coming to work prepared, mentally debriefing every night. We have tough calls, so using our resources well,” Langenhorst said.

“I’m going to be coming to work as prepared as I can be every day. Obviously, it’s such a diverse thing and so many different calls, so I’m just going to be learning from people around me,” Miller said.

Miller will graduate from the police academy next month. Once he finishes, Langenhorst will head to Des Moines to start the same program.
