I Know What You Did Last Summer is hooking its cast ahead of a planned release next summer.

Madelyn Cline, star of Neflix’s Outer Banks , and Camila Mendes, who played Veronica on CW’s long-running Riverdale , are in talks to lead the ensemble of Sony Pictures’ reboot of the 1997 horror hit.

Also in negotiations are Tony Award nominee Sarah Pidgeon, Atlanta’s Tyriq Withers and Jonah Hauer-King, who played Prince Eric in Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid .

THR previously reported that Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. were in talks to reprise their roles from the initial movie.

Jennifer Kaytin Robinson ( Do Revenge ) is directing the new project from a screenplay she co-wrote with Sam Lansky after an initial script from Leah McKendrick. Neal Moritz, one of the producers of the original, is producing the reboot.

Sony is moving swiftly on this one as it has penciled in a release of July 18, 2025, for the feature.

I Know What You Did Last Summer hit theaters on Oct. 17, 1997, and it surpassed $72 million at the box office ($142 million today). The cast included Hewitt, Prinze, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe in the story about a friend group stalked by a villain with a hook after they tried to cover up hitting him with their car. The initial movie was penned by Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson and based on the 1973 novel of the same name from author Lois Duncan.

Hewitt and Prinze returned for the 1998 sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer , while 2006’s I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer starred a brand-new cast and was strictly a home entertainment play. Amazon debuted a streaming series based on the property in 2021.

The model for the new take is the 2022 Scream reboot, which saw members of the original cast mix it up with a cast of young up-and-comers, which in that case included Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera. It also follows a studio strategy of trying to build a next generation of stars, as seen with the Sydney Sweeney-Glen Powell rom-com Anyone but You .

Mendes broke out with the role of Veronica on the series Riverdale , which ended its run last year. Her recent credits include the 2024 features Upgraded and Música , in addition to previously collaborating with Robinson on the 2022 Netflix teen black comedy Do Revenge .

Cline is known for playing Sarah Cameron on the series Outer Banks . Additionally, she was part of the bold-faced list of suspects in Rian Johnson’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery .

Pidgeon currently starring on Broadway in Stereophonic , reprising the role of Diana, which she originated off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons. The “play with music,” which tells of a Fleetwood Mac-like band on the cusp of stardom, set the record earlier this year for the most Tony Award nominations, earning 13, including one for Pidgeon. Her work has also nabbed nominations for the Drama League distinguished performance award and Outer Critics Circle outstanding featured performer award. On the screen side, she appeared as a young Kathryn Hahn in Hulu’s Tiny Beautiful Things and was a lead on the Amazon series The Wilds .

Withers, who may be best known for his turn on the FX series Atlanta , is poised for a big-screen breakout, having recently wrapped Him , formerly known as Goat , for Universal Pictures and Monkeypaw Productions. Withers plays the lead role in the film, a psychological thriller centering on a promising young NFL quarterback who is invited to train with his team’s aging star, played by Marlon Wayans. The film will have a theatrical release in September 2025.

Hauer-King is a British actor who appeared in TV adaptations of Little Women and Howard’s End . He most recently starred in The Tattooist of Auschwitz , a historical drama that debuted on Peacock this spring.

Cline is repped by CAA, Bold Talent Agency, Entertainment 360 and Hirsch Wallerstein, while Mendes is repped by CAA and Luber Roklin Entertainment.

Pidgeon is repped by Gersh, Anonymous Content and Jackoway Austen; Withers is repped by CAA and Jackoway Austen; and Hauer-King is repped by CAA, the U.K.’s United Agents and Jackoway Austen.
