Vice President Kamala Harris praised Joe Biden 's "legacy of accomplishment" in her first public appearance since the president abruptly quit his reelection bid on Sunday, clearing the way for her to run for the Democratic nomination.

"Joe Biden's legacy of accomplishment over the past three years is unmatched in modern history," she said on Monday with the White House as her backdrop. "In one term, he has already — yes, you may clap — in one term, he has already surpassed the legacy of most presidents who have served two terms in office."

The event, held on the South Lawn, was scheduled to honor collegiate sports champions and would have featured Biden had he not been holed up in Delaware with COVID-19. But the event attracted outsize attention after Biden endorsed Harris to replace him at the top of the ticket following Democratic pressure for him to step aside. Since then, most of the party has coalesced around Harris's candidacy.

Harris said Biden wanted to be there, is feeling much better, and looks forward to getting back on the road. Of course, Harris will take over campaign travel even as Biden continues his duties as president.

"I am firsthand witness that every day, our president, Joe Biden, fights for the American people, and we are deeply, deeply grateful for his service to our nation," Harris said. "And so, with that, on behalf of our president and Dr. [Jill] Biden, I am honored to welcome all of you to the White House to celebrate the achievements of these great athletes."
