Voters casting ballots for primary election

SPOKANE, Wash. - As Washington gears up for its upcoming primary elections, voters are faced with a diverse array of choices on their ballots.

Last week, voters received a voter pamphlet by mail containing detailed information on all candidates and local levies.

Public safety levies are a focal point on this election's ballots in cities like Cheney and Airway Heights, as well as fire districts in Mead, Newman Lake, and Deer Park.

Another notable development is the retirement announcement of Republican Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers from Eastern Washington's 5th District. G overnor Jay Inslee's seat is also open for the first time in twelve years.

Spokane County Election Manager Mike McLaughlin emphasized that voters do not need to cast a vote in every contest or race listed on their ballots for it to be valid.

"Look at your ballot, then read all the candidates. Mark them clearly. If you do have to make a correction, there's instructions clearly on the ballot," said McLaughlin.

The deadline to register to vote in the primaries by mail is next Monday, July 29, with August 6 being the final day for in-person registration. Voters who have already registered but do not receive their ballots by Tuesday, July 23 should promptly contact the Spokane County Elections Office.
