Virginians may get a much-needed tax break

Tax time can be discouraging for those who owe the IRS. In addition, it can be expensive to pay a service to file the taxes on your behalf. WTVR reveals that Members of Virginia's state congressional committee are united in doing something about this situation.

Senator Jeremy McPike pointed out, "People shouldn't have to pay to file their taxes. It's taxing taxes." Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger is among those who signed a letter asking Governor Glenn Youngkin to support a new program allowing those in the Commonwealth to file their federal taxes for free.

The letter asks for the Commonwealth to adopt the system during the 2025 legislative session. It comes after the IRS developed and piloted the program in 12 states last year. The agency said over 140,000 filers saved about five and a half million dollars by using it.

If this goes through, Virginians will obtain a much-needed break from paying hundreds of dollars to have their taxes filed. This would also affect companies like H&R Block, and Liberty Tax that charge filing fees.
