PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — The YMCA of South Hampton Roads has received a grant for more than $155,000 from POOLCORP.

POOLCORP is the world’s leading wholesale distributor of swimming pool equipment.

This potentially lifesaving gift will provide more than 1,500 children with free swimming lessons and fund the certification and training of 100 new Y lifeguards.

Joy Thomen, Vice President of Aquatics Experience, emphasized the crucial nature of the grant.

“Water safety is a year-round priority,” said Joy Thomen, vice president of aquatics experience. “POOLCORP’s ongoing commitment to the Y through the Swimpact program is instrumental in expanding access to vital water safety education. Together, we are creating a safer environment for our children.”

According to the YMCA, the CDC recognizes drowning as a leading cause of death for children. However, water safety programs can reduce the likelihood of drowning by more than 80%.
