JUST IN: 2 dead in plane crash near EAA AirVenture event

Two people died Monday when their plane crashed and burst into flames two miles south of the EAA AirVenture event, officials have confirmed.

The crash was first reported by air traffic controllers in the Wittman Airport tower

According to the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department, crews were called just after 12:30 p.m. on July 22 to a farm field in the area of Old Knapp Road and Nekimi Avenue for a report of a plane crash.

The plane was engulfed in flames when first responders arrived. Both occupants inside died at the scene, officials said.

The names of the victims, along with all other plane identifiers, are being withheld until family can be notified of the deaths.

The cause of the crash is not yet clear. The NTSB is spearheading the investigation.
