Two Wake County students are serving as interns this summer with Tar River Land Conservancy.

Tar River Land Conservancy is a nationally-accredited land trust that works to preserve natural resources across Edgecombe, Franklin, Granville, Halifax, Nash, Person, Vance and Warren counties in North Carolina.

Since 2000, Tar River Land Conservancy has protected 23,700 acres of land and 199 miles of streams. The nonprofit protects significant acreage in southern Granville County.

Each summer, offers Land Stewardship Internships that provide college students with valuable experiences to advance their educations and careers in conservation.
Since 2000, TRLC has protected over 23,000 acres of land across an eight-county region in North Carolina. Each protected property is visited annually to document property conditions and to monitor land management activities.

Many of these property visits are completed by the land stewardship interns.

This summer two college students from Wake County, Olivia John and Trey Mumma, accepted these internship roles. Their daily tasks include meeting with landowners, inspecting properties, using GPS navigation equipment, and preparing reports. They both decided to participate in TRLC’s internship to broaden their knowledge of conservation policy and land management, and to better understand the conservation goals of landowners and local communities.
Both Trey and Olivia plan to pursue careers in environmental conservation.

Olivia completed her B.S. in General Biology with an Environmental Science concentration from Florida Institute of Technology in May 2024. She will attend the University of North Carolina at Wilmington this fall to pursue a Master’s in Public Administration.
While at Florida Tech, Olivia was a member of the lacrosse team and served as a lead ambassador at Florida Tech’s Office of Admissions.

Olivia is also a Class of 2020 graduate of Wake Forest High School.

Trey will enter his senior year this fall at North Carolina State University to complete a double major in Environmental Technology & Management and Environmental Sciences. He is a Goodnight Scholar and Campus Sustainability Steward, and plays

percussion in the N.C. State Marching Band.

Trey is a Class of 2021 graduate of Heritage High School in Wake Forest.

Tar River Land Conservancy expects to host stewardship internships again next summer. If you or someone you know is interested in gaining experience working in conservation, please check TRLC’s website ( www.tarriver.org ) in early January for instructions to apply for this internship for summer 2025.
