Bernese Mountain Dog Turns on the Charm and Makes a New Bestie at Puppy Playtime

Introducing a puppy to new dogs can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. Will they have fun? Will they make friends? Or will they spend the hour hiding in a corner?

Fortunately, canines tend to be social creatures that quickly make pals. And few things are more precious than watching puppies becoming besties.

Watch this July 15 video to see two fluffy sweethearts getting acquainted.

Bernoulli’s (@ bunsenberner.bmd ) parents may have initially been concerned that he wouldn’t have a puppy to play with, but soon, a little Golden Retriever named Kevin came along. It appears it was worth the wait because these two had an immediate connection! After frolicking inside, they ventured outdoors to observe the older dogs playing together. Once they picked up on a few ideas, they headed back indoors to try out the moves they learned.

While Bernoulli used his more substantial Bernese Mountain Dog body to take the lead, Kevin noticed he could increase his size by standing on his back legs, something his larger pal couldn’t do as easily. Soon, they were both on their backs, taking turns as winners and losers, just like we want to see when puppies play. We know it was a good time because both dogs' damp fur almost appeared as if they had been swimming following 30 minutes of play-biting.

The Benefits of Early Socialization for Puppies

These early experiences play a crucial role in helping puppies form positive associations when meeting new dogs. This process not only teaches them how to interact and understand another dog’s body language but also equips them with the skills to navigate social situations and shape their future behaviors. These interactions are more than just playtime; they are also opportunities for puppies to build confidence and problem-solving skills and learn how to manage their abundant energy. It’s a comprehensive learning experience that contributes to their physical, mental, and social well-being.

Dog lovers enjoyed seeing this charming friendship. Viewer @shannon.madonna shared, “We refer to fighting while lying on one’s back as the ‘Reclining Warrior.’ It conserves energy.” That’s a good name for this pose. Viewer @beckybosshart responded, “Yeah, the puppy socials were my favorite part of George’s puppyhood. They go fast. Enjoy them!” They do, and they are as much fun for humans as they are dogs. Viewer @palomaalcalde pointed out, “A Golden and a Bernie: Name a better duo.” That’s hard to do!

The best part about watching a puppy on their first play date is knowing it will help give them skills to make friends throughout their lives. It’s equally fun to watch older dogs act like kids, too.
