WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – School supplies sales are already in full swing, and to make sure you’re not missing out, Staples employees recommend getting your lists and hitting stores early.

It’s that time of year again, and students, parents, and teachers are already planning for the school year ahead. According to the National Retail Federation, as of mid-July, more than half of back-to-school shoppers have started making their purchases.

Families with children in elementary through high school plan to spend an average of $874.68 on clothing, shoes, school supplies, and electronics. With multiple long lists of back-to-school must-haves, costs can quickly add up. But, by navigating sales, and knowing where and when to buy, you can still save this back-to-school season.

Staples announced its back-to-school deals on July 10, aiming to help students and educators start the year strong by saving on essential items. “We have a whole bunch of stuff like fifty cent notebooks, crayons, markers and stuff, everything like that’s on sale, you know, folders, everything,” said Staples Assistant Manager John Carpenter. “We have it all so, we’re a one-stop shop.”

Carpenter said people have already been purchasing school supplies and these deals will last all summer, “With the influx of traffic, especially with like we’re beating Amazon prices and stuff right now, it’s a great time to come in and buy.”

With Prime Day behind us, the next best day to stock up on back-to-school essentials is Massachusetts’ annual tax-free weekend. On August 10 and 11, shoppers will not have to pay the 6.25% sales tax on individual items costing $2,500 or less. This will prove especially useful on more expensive items, like electronics.

“Technology and stuff like that are gonna be a huge thing during the tax-free weekend because you’re saving forty to fifty bucks on taxes that weekend so it’s a good time to come in and buy,” said Carpenter.

Leading up to that weekend, gather your lists and check what items you already have. The NRF says it’s best to start shopping early, picking up items as you need them and as sales pop up.

Back-to-school sales will continue to run through August to accommodate school start dates across North America. Look for early deals wherever you plan to shop, and your students will be sure to start the school year strong.
