A Black woman says armed police officers showed up at her home in search of a man who was already in custody.

According to NBC 6 , the encounter between 27-year-old veteran Naomi Simmons and Miami-Dade police officers unfolded on June 14.

Simmons said she was home alone when she heard a banging noise on a bedroom window. When she went outside to see where the noise was coming from, Simmons said officers pointed guns at her face and told her they were looking for a felony suspect named Marquise Wiley who they believed was living in the home.

Simmons, who had been living at the home for over a year, said she didn't know who the man was. After the officers searched her home and left, Simmons said she was easily able to find Wiley's whereabouts.

The man had been in custody at Broward County Jail since January after he was transferred from a Miami-Dade County jail.

“I was able to find it with no resources and a cell phone on my couch,” Simmons said. “He was at the prison before they even came to my door.”

Miami-Dade police said they checked state, local, and federal databases to see if Wiley was in custody before searching Simmons' home. Miami-Dade court records last linked Wiley to Simmons' address in 2018. Police claimed that the address was also found on Wiley's driver's license.

Though police made a mistake, Simmons said the incident left her traumatized.

“I’m still not sleeping, I’m still having nightmares,” she said. “I already suffer from PTSD from my time in Afghanistan.”
