Several Clay County offices re-open

CLAY COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Some important computer systems are back up and running after the ransomware attack on July 9.

Daily operations are returning back to normal at the Clay County Courthouse, as several city officials have regained access to their computers. Clay Co. treasurer Jennifer Flater says that her staff still came into the offices despite the closure and collaboration between offices was an important factor.

“It takes two fold for all of those processes,” Flater said. “We had to coordinate with each other to be able to come in and make sure everything was covered that needed to be taken care of so that the county still ran efficiently as best as we could with the circumstances.”

Many officials were at the courthouse on July 19 to see what their computers could do. Clay Co. Veterans Service Officer Randy Kaelber says there was also more to learn about what happened in the days after the attack.

“I came in the next day and they said, ‘hey, you can’t use your computers or anything like that and we don’t want you to.’ I sat here, I had two people coming in so I worked with them doing some paperwork and stuff like that,” Kaelber said. “We had a meeting and they told us what was going on and they made the decision to close the courthouse and we are slowly but surely getting back.”

Along with the courthouse, computers from 10 other county offices began working.

The following Clay County Offices will be open as of Monday, July 22, 2024:
● Circuit Court – Note: Open on a very limited, emergency basis. The public should call the
Court on July 25, 2024, to check the status of their case.
● County Health Department
● Highway Department
● Probation
● Prosecutor’s Office – Note: Criminal Division scheduled to reopen on Monday, July 22,
2024.
● Sheriff’s Office
● Superior Court – Note: For case status updates click here or call the Court.
● Surveyor
● Treasurer
● Veterans – Note: Unable to assist with DD-214 at this time.
The following Clay County Offices will remain closed until further notice.
● Assessor
● Auditor
● Child Support
● Clerk of Court – Note: Office remains closed to the public, but some services are
available. Click here for more information on child support payments. Call the Clerk to
schedule marriage license appointments.
● CASA
● Election Office
● Recorder
