SALT LAKE CITY ( ABC4 ) — A heat advisory has been issued for the northern valleys of Utah, according to the National Weather Service .

The advisory takes place from noon to 10 p.m. on Wednesday, July 24. Temperatures are expected to reach 100 to 104 degrees through the Wasatch Front, Great Salt Lake Desert and Mountains, Tooele and Rush valleys, Cache Valley, and eastern Juab/Millard counties.

“We are heading into Pioneer Day with above average temperatures, but we will see a spike in daytime highs on the holiday!” said ABC4 Chief Meteorologist Alana Brophy. “This is dangerous heat sneaking up on us once again, thanks to a strong ridge of high pressure center over Utah, Nevada and Arizona.”

Dangerous heat is plaguing the West with several warnings and advisories being put in place. The region should see some relief from the extreme heat by Friday, according to the NWS.

“Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors,” an advisory from the NWS states. “Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.”

Hot temperatures may cause heat illnesses. To reduce the risk of illness during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned places.

“This strong ridge of high pressure is the reason we have seen a prolonged heat wave in the West,” Brophy said. “It’s been impacting Utah for the last ten days and its movement over Utah smashed heat records and as it centers up toward the Beehive State on Pioneer Day, we will see high heat return for the day.”

“Salt Lake has seen 12 triple digit days already this summer, and we typically average five, so we have doubled the average and could triple it soon. Many of these high heat days and broken heat records this year are linked to this monster area of high pressure,” Brophy said.

“We have seen several heat deaths and heat related illnesses spike since we kicked off July, so please, be extremely careful this Pioneer Day and make sure you stay hydrated and find shade if you must be outdoors,” Brophy said.

Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency. If you experience symptoms of heat illness , please call 911.
