For the first time in history, the 2024 Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony isn’t happening in a stadium. The Opening Ceremony will take place along the Seine River with nearly 100 boats traveling across the body of water carrying 10,000 Olympic athletes. The spectacle is a four-mile parade through the City of Light and more than 3,500 French dancers will be partaking in the celebration.

“For the first time in the ceremony’s history, the athletes will [take part in the artistic show] by passing through the tableaus,” creative director of the Opening and Closing Ceremony Thomas Jolly told Variety . “Right from the start we wanted to overturn the traditional structure that kept the artistic show, the athlete procession and the protocol as three discrete elements. Instead we’ll combine them all into a big fresco.”
