Scattered downpours to continue, provide high water threat
3 hours ago
Tonight features scattered downpours likely before midnight, with only an isolated sprinkle or two toward dawn. With a very light breeze expected, patchy dense fog is possible, with lows in the mid 60s. Some storms could produce locally heavy rain before midnight.
Tuesday is pretty quiet to begin with, as we’ll see a lull in activity with partly to mostly cloudy skies. However, by the afternoon, scattered downpours will once again pop up, which could produce locally heavy rainfall. This overall unsettled pattern is great in helping the tides turn on our drought, but too much rain at once could cause an instance or two of flash flooding over the next couple of days. With the abundant clouds and showers expected, high temperatures will remain a little cooler than last week, with highs in the low 80s – right where we should be this time of year.
Wednesday remains very unsettled at times, as our stalled frontal boundary remains nearly directly over our region. Rounds of showers and storms, some of which could be heavy, along with a lot of cloud cover will keep temperatures held down into the 70s in what will be a dreary day.
Thursday’s rain chances continue to be high despite our stationary front fizzling, as a trough over the Commonwealth of Virginia keeps the unsettled pattern in our region. In addition, a cold front with drier air will approach from the Great Lakes, however we won’t see any of that drier air arrive until Friday. With both systems nearby, scattered showers are likely with highs in the mid to upper 70s.
Friday finally dries us out a good bit, as high pressure noses in from the north across the Great Lakes and provides a little drop in humidity for us. An isolated shower still can’t be ruled out in our southern counties but most will be dry with partly sunny skies and highs in the low 80s.
Saturday is also pretty dry overall with just an isolated chance for a brief shower or two with Thursday’s cold front stalling down to our south across the Virginia/North Carolina border. Partly sunny skies are expected with highs in the low 80s.
Sunday begins to see our chances for rain creep back up, as a trough scoots through the area. Sunday won’t be a washout by any stretch but a few showers are possible with highs in the mid 80s.
Monday continues to see scattered shower and storm chances with high temperatures jumping back into the mid 80s.
Looking ahead in your extended forecast, it’s a continued unsettled pattern. This pattern is good in terms of trying to improve drought conditions in the region, but it also will help keep temperatures from being any hotter – we have a pretty warm air mass in place next week but the abundant showers will keep high temperatures held down into the low to mid 80s. Tuesday looks particularly wet with another system scooting through, with isolated to scattered showers expected Wednesday into Thursday.
