21 complete ‘Edgecombe Works!’ training

TARBORO — Twenty-one Edgecombe County employees recently strengthened their workplace skills by completing the Edgecombe Works! Office Skills Academy held at Edgecombe Community College.

The program is a partnership between the college and Edgecombe County government. The college provides the instructor and training, and the county funds tuition and fees for participants.

The program has a dual purpose, according to ECC President Greg McLeod.

“The Edgecombe Works! Office Skills Academy is a great recruitment and retention tool to attract and keep great employees but also serves as a great professional development opportunity that can help employees grow and advance,” he explained.

“The college is grateful to County Manager Eric Evans and the county commissioners for seeing the value in a program like this for their employees and for trusting us to provide the training,” McLeod added. “Their investment in their employees reflects strongly and positively on the commitment our county has toward its employees and to the future growth of our county as a whole.”

The class consisted of 96 instructional hours and was taught as a hybrid course. The first section was taught in person, and the second section was online.

Training included computer skills for the workplace, such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint; accounting; customer service skills; leadership skills; and time management.

Participants earned two industry-recognized certifications: Lean Six Sigma and OSHA-10.

Planning for future academies is underway, including a class that targets hands-on trades and skills development.

“We are looking forward to more opportunities to support our county and its citizens,” McLeod said.
