ER alumna Maura Tierney is returning to NBC, joining the cast of Law & Order as a new series regular for the upcoming 24th season.

The announcement follows the departure of series regular Camryn Manheim as Lieutenant Kate Dixon at the end of Season 23.

Details of Tierney’s character are not being revealed other than she will portray a new lieutenant on the Dick Wolf procedural.

Manheim departed the series following Sam Waterston, who announced his exit in February as District Attorney Jack McCoy. Tony Goldwyn later joined as the new district attorney.

Law & Order is a police procedural and legal drama that gives viewers a look at a case—inspired by real-life crimes “ripped from the headlines”— from the POV of the police and the prosecutors. It’s the longest-running law enforcement series on TV.

Dick Wolf is creator and executive producer. Rick Eid, Pamela Wechsler, Alex Hall, Arthur Forney and Peter Jankowski are executive producers. Law & Order is produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, in association with Wolf Entertainment.

The new season starts Oct. 3 at 8 p.m. on NBC and next day on Peacock.

Tierney can currently be seen co-starring in Universal’s Twisters.

TVLine was first to report Tierney’s casting.
