KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT) – After President Biden made the decision to not seek re-election on Sunday, local parties are weighing in on the decision.

“We are happy for President Biden, we are ecstatic about the choice for Kamala Harris, and we also are feeling like this is sort of a new day,” Democratic Women of Craven County President and North Carolina Democratic Delegate Diane Tyndall said. “The opportunity to make history, the opportunity to have a president who speaks for women, who speaks for African-Americans, who speaks for Asian-Americans, who speaks for groups who have never been represented at the top of the American political landscape.”

On the other side of the political aisle, the Republican Party of Lenoir County said Harris could potentially persuade some people to vote, who might not otherwise.

“I don’t think it’ll have much of an effect because those areas were already going to vote whoever is on the top of the democrat ticket,” Lenoir County Republican Party Chairman Sean P. Keenan said. “I don’t think our strategy will change much; the record of the Democrats is what is on the ballot here. Regardless of who it is, especially if it’s Vice President Harris. We feel comfortable comparing that record to the record of President Trump and his previous administration.”
