FARGO, ND ( KXNET ) — North Dakota’s Democrats admit they’ve never seen this before in politics.

It’s now four weeks until Democrats head to Chicago for their national convention, but most of them found out on Sunday that President Joe Biden isn’t running for four more years.

On Sunday, the President put out a statement that he won’t seek re-election. Instead, he endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris.

Jamie Selzler is a national committeeman for the North Dakota DEM-NPL party.

Selzler admits Biden’s withdrawal now creates a headache for some states, including Ohio, which has a ballot deadline of August 7 to certify a candidate.

Things to do around town: July 22-28

“The concern with that is that law doesn’t actually take effect until September 1, and so there’s potential risks that Republicans may sue to keep our candidate off the ballot in Ohio, or Washington state or a few other states,” Selzler said. “So, for those who are wanting a virtual roll call vote ahead of time, that’s the reason why.”

Selzler says committee members will meet on Wednesday to discuss how they’ll nominate their candidate.

He says it will likely happen with e-ballots that will be sent out by August 1. But he says any challenger can run for the nomination at the Chicago convention, they just need 300 signatures from delegates.

The Democrat convention starts on August 19.
