LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM)– Eight people were hospitalized Sunday following a horse and buggy crash in Lancaster County, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

State Police say troopers responded to a report of a collision between a motor vehicle and a horse and buggy on Lincoln Highway East west of Slaymaker Hill Road in Paradise Township at 4:16 p.m. on Sunday.

According to PSP, a Toyota Prius, operated by James Walkergoutal, 27, was traveling on Lincoln Highway when it collided with the rear of a horse and buggy.

Troopers said eight people, including a five-month-old, were riding in the buggy. All eight people sustained injuries of varying levels of severity and were transported by EMS to Lancaster General Hospital. The severity of the injuries is unknown at this time.

During their investigation, troopers concluded that Walkergoutal was allegedly under the influence of drugs and alcohol during the time of the accident and was taken into custody.

Walkergoutal is charged with Aggravated Assault by Vehicle (DUI), Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol or Controlled Substances, Reckless Driving, and other traffic violations.
