LEE COUNTY, Ala. ( WRBL ) — News of President Biden leaving the presidential race receives a response from the Lee County Democratic Party in east Alabama.

President Joe Biden announced he would be leaving the presidential race Sunday afternoon. This announcement comes after members of the democratic party called for Biden to drop out of the race following his performance in the presidential debate held in late June.

Jamie Lowe, the Chair of the Democratic Party in Lee County tells News 3 there were lots of emotions when the news came out.

“There’s a lot of momentum behind the vice president, Kamala Harris, and she has a fever about her,” Lowe stated. “We’re just excited.”

Lowe noted that the party has not lost a nominee as President Biden was the presumptive nominee. He says, “this is as close to a convention to have the presumptive nominee drop out as ever happened in American history.”

He added that members in his executive board had reservations about Biden leaving the race so late. However, the views are reflected across the democratic electorate.

“There were a few of them who were of the opinion that perhaps it is time to make a transition.”

Vice President Kamala Harris is the leading candidate, with several state delegations already announcing their support of her.

Alabama was not one of those states, but Lowe assured there is support for her.

Lowe is not only the chair of the Democratic Party of Lee County, but a delegate to the Democratic National Convention.

As a delegate, he says they are not in support of a candidate yet. Lowe says the Democratic National Convention Rules Committee will have a meeting later this week to outline a plan of action for the vice president and other potential candidates

Lowe shared, “I’m hoping whatever candidate gets the nomination will be able to pull back that support”.

Late monday morning, Vice President Kamala Harris spoke publicly for the first time since announcing she would be in the race. In her remarks she is seen standing in front of NCAA teams.

Lowe thinks by being in that position it shows how she could pull younger voters.

“I think having a candidate that is exciting and excitable, like Kamala Harris to invigorate some of our youth vote and around minority vote will be the difference between a win and loss”

Lowe also believes Vice President Harris could pull on younger black voters as well.

“The Vice President will certainly bring a new perspective.” says Lowe. “A new approach, a breath of fresh air. That’s a benefit of her because she is an experienced candidate.”

Lowe says if Vice President Kamala Harris is the nominee, he does not doubt that she will win the election.
