Oregon DMV warns of phishing scam targeting drivers via unsolicited messages

PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) – The Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles is warning against a phishing scam after learning that hackers have contacted drivers across the state claiming to be from the DMV.

Officials warn that scammers have tried to trick Oregon residents into giving up personal information or money by accessing a person’s driver’s license number, social security number, or date of birth through an unsolicited phone call, text or email.

Meanwhile, the Oregon DMV clarified they will never ask for personal information.

“Please note, Oregon DMV offers secure online services and sends text or email messages in some instances, but they are never unsolicited, and the messages never include personal information or verification links,” the DMV said. “DMV texts or emails are based on an action initiated by the customer, such as an appointment reminder or cancellation notice.”

Anyone receiving a message from an unsolicited scammer is advised to hang up or delete the message and not click on any links. Reports can be made by contacting the DMV directly at 1-877-877-9392 or online .
