‘A lot to answer for’: Wichita County Republican reacts to Biden’s drop out of presidential race

WICHITA COUNTY ( KFDX/KJTL ) — Vice President Kamala Harris has not officially been named the new 2024 Democratic candidate after President Biden’s decision not to go on running; still, several endorsements have come her way.

Despite that apparent support, though, according to Wichita County Republican Party Chairwoman Julie Wilson, it’s not fair to Democratic voters who specifically voted for Biden.

“We are in uncharted territory right now,” Wilson said.

As Biden steps down and Harris seeks to assume the role of Democratic candidate for the 2024 election, Wilson said the unprecedented shift is unfair to Democratic voters.

“The voters went out, and they voted for the candidate they wanted in the primary, and that’s not an easy process to run,” Wilson said. “I’m sure they’re upset, and I empathize with my Democrat colleagues.”

While many in Washington have endorsed Harris’ candidacy, Wilson said Harris’ youth may not be enough to catapult her to the presidency. Instead, she said, voters should examine all aspects of both parties’ actions.

“Kamala has a lot to answer for and her record. She hasn’t done much at the border and other places, and so, yes, people do worry about age, and she is younger,” Wilson said. “But I think it comes down to the message and what the different parties and candidates can offer the American people.”

Despite uncertainty about exactly how the 2024 election will go, Wilson and fellow Wichita County Republican Party members remain strong in supporting former President Donald Trump.

“We feel very confident in ourselves and our candidate, and we are ready no matter who is chosen,” Wilson said.

And for local voters, Wilson urges everyone to study up and reflect before November.

“Look at the party and look at what’s happening in our country and really consider your options,” Wilson said.

As the election’s future hangs in the balance, Wilson and others in the organization continue to encourage residents to get out and involved in the election through the organization’s upcoming 2024 Victory Gala and other future political events.
