ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10)—Now that Joe Biden has bowed out of the presidential race, Governor Kathy Hochul is throwing her support behind Vice President Kamala Harris.

“I know a little bit about being number two,” said Hochul. “You’re the most qualified to understand what is involved in the role you’re expected to step into if circumstances arise requiring it. So, I’ve worked with her. I’ve seen her in New York, she’s been a partner of mine as well.”

Hochul said the Vice President tried to reach her on Sunday, but they played a game of phone tag.

“It really was multiple tries last night,” said Hochul. “We had a jammed schedule this morning. I’m not worried about making that call or having it happen. It will happen and I will pledge my full support.”

Other New York Democrats supporting Harris include Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado and Senator Kiersten Gillibrand.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jefferies have not said who they will endorse.

Jeff Wice, a professor at New York Law School, said Harris will have access to the funds raised by the Biden campaign.

“Other candidates won’t have that advantage, which is a major issue, and she will pretty much be in place for Joe Biden’s support to inherit the delegates that she extensively won as his vice-presidential running mate in the primaries earlier this year.”

When it comes to the convention, Governor Hochul said New York has a lot of influence since it has the second-largest number of delegates.

“Second only to California,” explained Hochul.

New York Delegates will have a virtual meeting at 8 p.m. with the governor and other state Democratic party leaders, including Chairman Jay Jacobs.

“We’re gonna be hopefully coming out of that call with an endorsement for Kamala Harris,” said Jacobs. “I’m hopeful that happens and we will certainly make that announcement after.”
