BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — Regardless of your age, books can take you to another world.

The Raleigh County Public Library staff aim to take students to higher reading levels through the annual Summer Reading Program, Raleigh County Public Library Youth Services Director Amy Smith said on Monday, July 22, 2024.

“We had seven weeks of summer reading this year,” said Smith, adding that the program would end with a party on Saturday, July 26, 2024. “We just like to have our summer reading programs to make sure that children don’t lose what they learn during the school year over the summer months. We want to make sure they’re able to maintain their reading levels.”‘

The Chick-fil-A cow paid a visit to the library on Monday and mimed a story from a rocking chair as a Chick-fil-A worker read aloud.

The cow gave high fives and hugs. Savannah Bailey, a member of the reading program, said she recommends the program to other students.

“It helps with your reading so when you go back to school you get a new level of books,” said Savannah. “And, just in general, reading is fun.”

Sean O’Brien, who brought his two children to the Summer Reading Program, also recommended the program.

“It’s been a great summer program for the kids. [The program] helps get them out of the house, come to the library,” said O’Brien. “They get to learn, read some books, and they’ve got great incentives, great prizes for the kids, for reading.”
