Real Reason Kate Middleton Released Prince George’s Birthday Photo in Black and White

So many royal fans remember the day Prince George was born. Well, the future king looks all grown up now in his latest birthday portrait.

On July 22, 2024, George celebrated his 11th birthday. To mark the occasion, the Princess of Wales ( formerly known as Kate Middleton) shared a picture on social media that she took of her oldest son. This is something the princess usually does on her children’s birthdays each year but some wondered why Kate decided to release a black-and-white photo instead of one with color.

A former royal photographer says George’s mother did so to send a message.

Photographer says this is why Kate chose black and white for Prince George’s picture

Broadcaster and former commissioned royal photographer Ian Pelham-Turner spoke to Express about why Kate opted to go the black-and-white route with this particular picture of Prince George. He explained that it was used to “produce nostalgic and symbolic imagery which keeps the royal family in the public eye.”

The professional photographer noted: “[Kate] obviously loves taking photographs — it’s one of her biggest hobbies. She is a good photographer she’s created some very interesting images in the past. The reality is she likes creating imagery that is — with black and white it’s a lot starker. It’s a much more focused image.”

According to Pelham-Turner, “Sometimes color can take away from the distant aspects of the shot. With black and white it’s something that is symbolic of showing the royal family. Just a straight image of them without any distraction of color. When you go through that type of college training they normally use film cameras to start off with and then they go to black and white. So for [the Princess of Wales] having a black-and-white image is just something that’s quite trendy for her.

“The idea is to produce an image that is quite stylish. The black-and-white photograph has a look of the former queen on the image as well, so again it might be nostalgia why it’s done in black and white at the same time.”

In his birthday photo, George is sporting a button-down shirt, a blazer, and a braided bracelet similar to the ones Princess Charlotte has been wearing lately.

George’s sister had a friendship bracelet on her wrist in her own birthday portrait shot by Kate on May 2. The little princess was also seen wearing a couple of friendship bracelets when she attended the Wimbledon Men’s final on July 14 with her mom and Aunt Pippa.

Even King Charles was rocking a string bracelet that fans noticed when he gave a wave after departing the State Opening of Parliament on July 17.

The bracelets are reminiscent of the friendship-bracelet trend among Taylor Swift fans at her Eras tour, which George and Charlotte attended in June with Prince William. So to see the king wearing one as well has many asking: Is the monarch a Swiftie too?
