MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. ( WKRG ) — The Mobile County Commission appointed Kimberly Newberry Sanderson to county engineer on Monday in its regular meeting.

According to a news release from Mobile County, Sanderson is the first female to be appointed to the position in the county’s 212-year history.

Sanderson began acting as the county engineer on April 1 ahead of W. Bryan Kegley’s retirement as county engineer. She was named interim county engineer on May 9.

“After decades of exemplary service, it’s our pleasure to promote Kim Sanderson to the top engineering position in Mobile County,” District 2 Commissioner Connie Hudson said. “Her knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience make her uniquely suited for this appointment. We believe the County will benefit by having her in this pivotal role.”

Sanderson has worked with the Mobile County Commission since 2001 in several roles including assistant county engineer, engineering manager-design and engineer III. She also has experience working with Polysurveying of Mobile and the Alabama Department of Transportation.

“As County Engineer, Sanderson will oversee the daily operations of the Engineering Department and its 30 employees,” a release from the county commission said. “She will be responsible for the planning and construction of Mobile County roads and bridges as well as other engineering projects and infrastructure initiatives.”

The county commission release also said Sanderson has been instrumental in helping the commission’s engineering plan, budget, project implementation and oversight as assistant county engineer and interim county engineer.

“Mobile County has more than 160 bridges, and she has had primary oversight of Mobile County’s Bridge Management Programs for 20 years,” the commission’s release said. “She began overseeing Mobile County’s efforts with the State’s Rebuild Alabama program in 2021, through which Mobile County plans and implements annual road construction projects.”

According to the release, Sanderson is a professional engineer and a certified bridge inspector with a BS in Civil Engineering from Auburn University. She has also earned an Association of County Commissions of Alabama Certificate in County Engineering Administration.

She has also been a Mobile Metropolitan Planning Organization’s Technical Coordinating Committee member for over a decade. She is also active in the Association of County Engineers of Alabama, the release said.

“Kim Sanderson’s promotion to County Engineer is a testament to her skills and experience, as well as her deep understanding of our engineering function,” Mobile County Commission President and District 3 Commissioner Randall Dueitt said. “Her approach to challenges, innovative solutions, and earned respect make her the perfect leader for Mobile County Engineering.”
