(AP) — A Mississippi grand jury decided not to bring criminal charges against a sheriff’s deputy who fatally shot a man who was yelling “shoot me,” the state attorney general’s office said Monday. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Department said three deputies responding to a report of an attempted break-in found Isaiah Winkley, 21, of Coweta County, Georgia, when they arrived outside a home in Kiln on Dec. 10, 2022. A federal judge reviewed video recorded by an officer’s body camera that showed Winkley holding a steel fence post in one hand and candy in the other as he yelled “Shoot me” several times to the deputies.  One deputy shot Winkley with a Taser that had little effect, and then deputy Michael Chase Blackwell used a gun to shoot Winkley multiple times, wrote the judge, who is overseeing a separate civil case brought by Winkley’s family.

DALLAS (AP) — Lawyers for relatives of some of the people killed in Boeing Max jetliner crashes asked a federal judge on Wednesday to reject a plea agreement the aircraft maker struck with U.S. prosecutors, saying it is too lenient and lets Boeing avoid accountability for causing 346 deaths. Some of the lawyers argued that the Justice Department has treated Boeing lightly because the company is a major contractor to the U.S. government. Boeing agreed on July 7 to plead guilty to a single count of conspiracy to commit fraud to settle allegations that it deceived Federal Aviation Administration regulators who approved the 737 Max and then broke a 2021 settlement that would have let the company escape criminal prosecution.  Under this month’s deal, Boeing would pay a fine of at least $243.6 million, invest $455 million in compliance and safety programs, and be placed on probation for three years. The Justice Department and Boeing would pick a monitor to oversee the company’s compliance.

I humbly invite all the parties to finalize the agreement,” Green said in an interview at his office. “It appears that we are almost there, and we only have a very tiny holdout remaining.”

DENVER (AP) — Pro Football Hall of Famer Terrell Davis posted an email from United Airlines Tuesday that said he was banned from flying the airline until a review of an incident earlier this month was complete. But United officials said they already told Davis’ team that the ban was rescinded weeks ago.  The conflicting messages heightened tensions, with Davis’ attorney, Parker Stinar, denying that Davis had received notice that the ban was withdrawn and calling for an “overhaul of United’s leadership.” The back and forth was kicked off two weeks ago when Davis, who previously played for the Denver Broncos, said he was handcuffed and removed from a July 13 flight after he lightly tapped a flight attendant on the arm, prompting the employee to say “don’t hit me” and hurry off. Davis, who was later released with apologies, has called out United for making him feel “humiliated” and demanded an investigation.

(AP) — The daughter of baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Dennis Eckersley testified at her trial Wednesday that she didn’t know she was pregnant when she gave birth in the woods in subfreezing temperatures on Christmas night in 2022 and thought her now 19-month-old son had died. Alexandra Eckersley, 27, was homeless at the time and living in a tent in Manchester, New Hampshire. A forensic psychologist testified earlier Wednesday that Eckersley was suffering from mental health and developmental issues diagnosed since childhood, as well as substance abuse disorder. She was not being treated for those conditions at the time. Her trial started July 25 and the jury received the case Wednesday afternoon.  Deliberations were expected to resume Thursday morning. “Ally had no clue what was happening,” her attorney, Kim Kossick, said during closing arguments.

(AP) — A proposal aimed at blocking a planned casino in Arkansas qualified for the November ballot on Wednesday after election officials said supporters turned in more than enough signatures to qualify. A campaign to ease restrictions on the state’s medical marijuana program, meanwhile, fell short of the signatures required but qualified for an additional 30 days to circulate petitions. Secretary of State John Thurston’s office said it verified that Local Voters in Charge, the group behind the casino measure, submitted at least 116,200 valid signatures from registered voters — surpassing the 90,704 needed to qualify. The group’s proposed constitutional amendment would repeal the license granted for a Pope County casino that has been hung up by legal challenges for the past several years. Pope County was one of four sites where casinos were allowed to be built under a constitutional amendment that voters approved in 2018. Casinos have already been set up in the other three locations.
