SALT LAKE CITY ( ABC4 ) — The Chair of the Utah Democratic Party announced on Monday that Utah’s national Democratic delegates were unanimously endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris to become the presidential nominee for the party.

UDP Chair Diane Lewis released a statement on Monday to explain the unanimous endorsement, saying, “Her background as a criminal prosecutor makes her the perfect candidate to defeat Donald Trump, a convicted felon and twice-impeached ex-President.”

The statement also said, in part, “Kamala Harris is the most qualified candidate to lead our country for the next four years.”

Lewis continued to say that the 2024 election is “the most important of [her] lifetime,” after saying the “MAGA Republicans” were “attacking” the democratic institutions of the United States, abortion rights, social security, LGBTQ+ rights, and more.

Lewis said Harris had seen support from young people, Latino and Black voters, and women who could “carry her campaign to victory” after Biden bowed out of the race.

“Utah Democrats are committed to joining Vice-President Harris’ coalition to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme MAGA agenda this November,” the statement concluded.

The unanimous endorsement came the day after President Joe Biden announced that he was dropping out of the 2024 presidential race. Following his social media announcement, he later endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor.

“My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made,” Biden said of Harris on Sunday. “Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”

According to reports from the Associated Press, Harris’ team raised more than $81 million within 24 hours of Harris receiving Biden’s endorsement.

The Democratic National Convention will kick off in Chicago on Monday, Aug. 19, during which the Democratic Party will officially choose its presidential nominee.
