Jeopardy! airs without mention of late host Alex Trebek's birthday while USPS issues honorary stamp

Monday was the late Alex Trebek's birthday, and while Jeopardy! social media accounts wished their late host a happy birthday, the episode that aired that night didn't.

The episode went on like any other one with no mention of the man who hosted the show from 1984 until his death in 2020. Alex passed away from complications of Stage IV pancreatic cancer and would have turned 84 today.

While the episode itself went on as normal - with Ken Jennings hosting as Monica Anderson, Sean Duffie, and Neilesh Vinjamuri - fans online paid tribute to Alex. One fan wrote on Reddit that they were "thinking of all the joy he has brought to all of us over the years."

Besides the fans, the United States Postal Service also celebrated Alex's birthday. They issued a forever stamp honoring Alex's long tenure at Jeopardy!

Each stamp is in the style of the video monitor answers featured on the long-running game show. They read: "This naturalized U.S. citizen hosted the quiz show ‘Jeopardy!’ for 37 seasons."

Underneath that, the correct response is written upside down in smaller letters: "Who is Alex Trebek?" The stamps had an unveiling at a dedication ceremony at Sony Pictures Studios where the show is filmed in Culver City, California.

Michael Elston, the Secretary of the USPS Board of Governors, said in a statement: “Millions of Americans invited Alex Trebek into their living rooms each weeknight. After thousands of shows over 37 seasons, he was someone we trusted and felt like we knew. And with his intelligence and wit, he made it cool to be smart.”

Alex's widow, Jean Trebek, said: "My family and I were completely surprised about Alex being honored by the U.S. Postal Service. It is a such an extraordinary honor and a wonderful way to recognize what Alex meant to so many people,”

She added: “Alex would be over the moon about this distinctive honor and, he'd feel very humbled. I think the stamp design is very creative because Alex Trebek is the answer to all the clues.”
