Bertie High School Principal William Peele III could be running out of wall space.

He recently received a certificate from the UNC World View’s Global Education Leaders Program for attending and participating in the annual program. This will join other awards for his contribution to education including District Teacher of the Year, District Principal of the Year and Northeast Regional Principal of the Year for the state of North Carolina.

The constant expansion of today’s connected world requires students to be more prepared to become globally competent citizens able to work collaboratively across cultures.

The UNC world leader program brought together current and aspiring leaders from K-12 schools, districts and community colleges. Together, these leaders examined global issues that impact students and their communities.

Participants in the three-day forum, held in Chapel Hill, were led by UNC faculty and industry experts as they engaged in dialogue about key global topics, from the European Union and U.S.-Japan relations to engaging differences in cross-cultural communication while addressing how to prepare students to meet workforce needs in a global society.

The highlighted speakers included IBM Chief Analytics Officer Timothy Humphrey, Kenneth J. Reckford Political Science Professor Jonathan Hartlyn and Kenan Flagler Business School Associate Professor Tim Flood.

Since 2002, World View’s Leadership Programs have helped professional educators plan and implement programs that increase global understanding among faculty and students in their schools, districts and colleges.

A specially designed track for K-12 teachers focuses more extensively on strategies for the classroom.

Peele has dedicated 24 years to Bertie County Schools. He has served as a history teacher, assistant principal and principal. He holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Elizabeth City State University. He furthered his education at East Carolina University, where he received his North Carolina teacher certification, a master’s degree in school administration and an educational specialist degree (EdS).

“He is a strong instructional leader that possesses strong analytical problem-solving skills and excels at cultivating and maintaining professional partnerships. Additionally, he has a deep understanding of policies, procedures, and practices, which he effectively applies daily in his field of work,” according to a statement from the district.

In addition to his professional roles, Peele is an active member of several educational organizations, including the North Carolina Principals and Assistant Principals Association and the North Carolina Association for School Administrators.
