The start of the high school football season is quickly approaching, and in just a little over four months, six teams will be crowned state champions by the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association .
Although official practices won't begin for a few weeks, teams across the state have been holding voluntary summer workouts, gearing up for the new season.
Last year, four MPSSAA teams finished as undefeated state champions — Fort Hill in Class 1A, Dunbar in 2A-1A, Stephen Decatur in 2A and Oakdale in 3A . The other title winners were Mergenthaler Vo-Tech (4A-3A) and Henry A. Wise (4A).
Perennial powers Fort Hill and Dunbar both three-peated as state champions, while Stephen Decatur made the most of its first appearance in the finals.

1A: Fort Hill 45, Mountain Ridge 21
2A-1A: Dunbar 8, Calvert 0
2A: Stephen Decatur 21, Huntingtown 13
3A: Oakdale 42, Linganore 35
4A-3A: Mergenthaler Vo-Tech 14, North Point 7

The first day of official practice is Aug. 14.

The season kicks off Sept. 6.

When are the Maryland high school football championships?
The state finals will be played Dec. 5-7 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis.
