Andy Murray has announced his retirment from tennis as he prepares to compete as this summer's Olympics .

Taking to Twitter ahead of this summer's games in Paris, he wrote: “Arrived in Paris for my last ever tennis tournament @Olympics. Competing for GB have been by far the most memorable weeks of my career and I’m extremely proud to get do it one final time!"

Murray bid a heart-wrenching farewell to Wimbledon earlier this month. He did not play in the men's singles, that he won in 2013 and 2016, and was forced to pull out of the mixed doubles alongside Emma Raducanu after her injury issues.

It meant that his final appearance at Wimbledon came alongside brother Jamie in the men's doubles. The 2012 US Open winner will now aim to add to the major success that he has enjoyed at the Olympics .

The 37-year-old won gold at the 2012 Games in London, retaining his title four years later in Brazil. Before heading to Paris, Murray has been handing over his knowledge to one of the sport’s up and coming stars. His mum Judy has confirmed that he has been training alongside 17-year-old starlet Charlie Robertson.

Taking to Twitter with a picture of the pair, she wrote: “Charlie Robertson: the Scottish teenager following in Andy’s footsteps, heads to New York for the US Open junior event next month. He’s ranked 25 in the world and has just spent a week as Andy’s training partner. Investing in the next generation.”

She then followed that up by confirming that Murray's appearance in Paris will be the final time he takes to the court in a pro tournament. She added: "5th Olympics. Final tournament."

Murray has also spoken about his long-term retirement on a number of occasions in the past. Asked if he would move into the commentary box, he turned down the opportunity and instead suggested that a career in coaching could await.

He said: "I'm not never going to come back here! It depends who I'm watching. I hate watching my brother. I find it really difficult to watch my brother play.

“I love tennis. I watch it all the time. I would probably be more comfortable sitting up there in a coaching box rather than somewhere else."

While he is due to retire, Murray is not quite ready to hang up his racket quite yet. He also confirmed that he would still be on the court - as well as the golf course.

As quoted by Hello!, he said: “I’ll definitely still be playing tennis, just not on the tour. I plan to play a lot more golf, and I'll probably carry on working with my strength and conditioning coach, Matt Little, as I transfer from being a full-time athlete and adjusting to not needing to do quite so much.”
