It has been confirmed that Joker: Folie à Deux will have its world premiere at this year's Venice Film Festival as part of the Venezia 81 Competition ahead of its October 4 theatrical release.
Todd Phillips will return to the Lido five years on from the premiere of Joker , which debuted at the festival in 2019, where it received an eight-minute standing ovation from those in attendance.
Speculation that Joker: Folie à Deux would premiere in Venice has been rife since the project was first announced, and it has now been confirmed this morning by the festival's artistic director, Alberto Barbera.
The official line-up also includes titles such as Alfonso Cuarón's television mini series Disclaimer , 2073 from Asif Kapadia, Errol Morris' Separated , Tim Burton's Beetlejuice Beetlejuice , Pablo Larraín's Maria , and Pedro Almodóvar's The Room Next Door.
Joker: Folie à Deux reunites us with Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck and serves as a continuation of the story established in Joker .
Fleck, now incarcerated in Arkham State Hospital, meets Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, and when the two are released, their doomed love affair sets them on the path of a condemned romantic misadventure.
The first preview of Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in the new film was released at CinemaCon in April, which gave us a glimpse at how Harley Quinn fits into the narrative.
The casting director for Joker: Folie à Deux says Lady Gaga will "blow your mind" , and the preview offers a taste of this as Joker and Harley Quinn cross paths for the first time and establish a connection that will propel them into the characters we know today.
The two-and-a-half-minute look also offered us a taste of the theatrical leanings of Phillips as a director, who has informed us that "music is an essential element" of Joker: Folie à Deux .
More of a preview will come when the new trailer lands today, and if you want to be one of the first to watch it, you can read our guide on how to watch the new Joker: Folie à Deux trailer .
