Former Georgia Lt. Gov. Tells CNN GOP Senator’s ‘Civil War’ Vow ‘Par for the Course’: ‘That’s We Got to Jan. 6’

CNN contributor Geoff Duncan , also the former Republican lieutenant governor of Georgia, called a Republican’s reference to a potential “civil war” just “par for the course” in today’s politics and pointed blame at Donald Trump .

Kasie Hunt played footage on CNN This Morning of Ohio state Sen. George Lang (R) introducing Trump’s running mate, JD Vance , at a rally and saying that a “civil war” may be needed to “save” the country.

“I’m afraid if we lose this one, it’s going to take a civil war to save the country, and it will be saved,” the Republican told the crowd.

“Pretty ominous framing,” Hunt noted.

Lang later said he regretted his remarks in a statement to Politico .

“I regret the divisive remarks I made in the excitement of the moment on stage, especially in light of the assassination attempt of President Trump last week. We should all be mindful of what is said at political events, myself included,” Lang said.

Duncan, a vocal critic of Trump, blamed the former president for Lang’s comments and said such rhetoric has driven him to the point of supporting Democrats for the presidency. “History will be kind” to Republicans who support Democrats over Trump, he added.

“It’s par for the course. I’ve been behind the curtain watching Donald Trump make decisions. I’ve watched him make horrible, selfish decisions around Covid, around $8 trillion worth of money we didn’t have and spent it against Republican/conservative principles, I’ve seen him try and steal an election, I’ve seen him lie, cheat,” Duncan said.

The current Republican Party, he argued, has no guardrails.

“That kind of rhetoric happens because there are no guardrails. Winning an election is more important than winning as a country and, look, that’s how we got to Jan. 6, that’s how we got to the chaos on the streets here in Georgia, that’s how we get to all the chaos that follows Donald Trump,” he said.
