The Arizona Cardinals players report for training camp Tuesday. The first part of camp includes medical examinations and that leads to roster designations.

It is when we can see players added to the active PUP list (physically unable to perform) and NFI (non-football injury) list.

    What are those?

PUP is for players who suffered a work-related injury (either in a game last season or while working out or practicing with the team in the offseason) and are not ready for practice.

NFI is for players who suffered an injury but it wasn’t while they were with the team. We sometimes see this with rookies if they were injured entering the draft (cornerback Garrett Williams was on that list before his return because he tore his ACL in college) and other times it is when players get hurt while working out on their own.

A couple of players who might start on PUP are offensive linemen Carter O’Donnell and Jon Gaines.

O’Donnell was not practicing with the team during the last part of OTAs or during minicamp. It is presumed to be for an injury. Gaines is coming off a knee injury and did not practice in the offseason workouts. Head coach Jonathan Gannon said he should be able to practice in some capacity in camp but he might start on PUP.

Those roster designations will come later in the day on Tuesday.
